    Assessment of #TheDress With Traditional Color Vision Tests: Perception Differences Are Associated With Blueness

    Based on known color vision theories, there is no complete explanation for the perceptual dichotomy of #TheDress in which most people see either white-and-gold (WG) or blue-and-black (BK). We determined whether some standard color vision tests (i.e., color naming, color matching, anomaloscope settings, unique white settings, and color preferences), as well as chronotypes, could provide information on the color perceptions of #TheDress. Fifty-two young observers were tested. Fifteen of the observers (29%) reported the colors as BK, 21 (40%) as WG, and 16 (31%) reported a different combination of colors. Observers who perceived WG required significantly more blue in their unique white settings than those who perceived BK. The BK, blue-and-gold, and WG observer groups had significantly different color preferences for the light cyan chip. Moreland equation anomaloscope matching showed a significant difference between WG and BK observers. In addition, #TheDress color perception categories, color preference outcomes, and unique white settings had a common association. For both the bright and dark regions of #TheDress, the color matching chromaticities formed a continuum, approximately following the daylight chromaticity locus. Color matching to the bright region of #TheDress showed two nearly distinct clusters (WG vs. BK) along the daylight chromaticity locus and there was a clear cutoff for reporting WG versus BK. All results showing a significant difference involved blue percepts, possibly due to interpretations of the illuminant interactions with the dress material. This suggests that variations in attributing blueness to the #TheDress image may be significant variables determining color perception of #TheDress.Fil: Feitosa-Santana, Claudia.     Art through the colors of graffiti: from the perspective of the chromatic structure

    Graffiti is a general term that describes inscriptions on a wall, a practice with ancient origins, ranging from simple drawings and writings to elaborate pictorial representations. Nowadays, the term graffiti commonly describes the street art dedicated to wall paintings, which raises complex questions, including sociological, legal, political and aesthetic issues. Here we examine the aesthetics of graffiti colors by quantitatively characterizing and comparing their chromatic structure to that of traditional paintings in museums and natural scenes obtained by hyperspectral imaging. Two hundred twenty-eight photos of graffiti were taken in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The colors of graffiti were represented in a color space and characterized by several statistical parameters. We found that graffiti have chromatic structures similar to those of traditional paintings, namely their preferred colors, distribution, and balance. In particular, they have color gamuts with the same degree of elongation, revealing a tendency for combining similar colors in the same proportions. Like more traditional artists, the preferred colors are close to the yellow–blue axis of color space, suggesting that graffiti artists’ color choices also mimic those of the natural world. Even so, graffiti tend to have larger color gamuts due to the availability of a new generation of synthetic pigments, resulting in a greater freedom in color choice. A complementary analysis of graffiti from other countries supports the global generalization of these findings.     Saturation-specific pattern of acquired colour vision deficiency in two clinical populations revealed by the method of triads

    Subjective colour spaces were reconstructed for persons occupationally exposed to mercury (Hg) and patients with diabetes mellitus type 2, two groups at risk for acquired colour-vision deficiency, and compared with healthy normal trichromats. Judgments of colour dissimilarity were collected with the method of triads, applied to a composite assortment of colour samples. These were drawn from two widely used colour arrangement tests—10 hues from the Farnsworth D-15 test and five from the Lanthony Desaturated D-15d test, ensuring that the assortment sampled two levels of lightness and saturation. The data were analyzed with maximum-likelihood multidimensional scaling (MDS) and within a novel individual-differences MDS model to estimate subject-specific parameters. The MDS solutions for the two clinical groups showed a compression along a blue-yellow axis, limited however to desaturated hues. This result was confirmed by the individual-differences model. In addition, the clinical groups were found to place significantly higher weights on the lightness differences between stimuli, conceivably to compensate for their reduced chromatic discrimination. The specific form of colour-space distortion in the clinical groups indicated an increase in their thresholds for blue-yellow signals, providing insights into the nature of impairment mechanisms. The results have implications for stimuli and diagnostic procedures for testing individual differences in color vision, and for analyzing the responses.     Color space distortions in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

    Color vision impairment was examined in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) without retinopathy. We assessed the type and degree of distortions of individual color spaces. DM2 patients (n = 32), and age-matched controls (n = 20)were tested using the Farnsworth D-15 and the Lanthony D-15d tests. In addition, subsets of caps from both tests were employed in a triadic procedure (Bimler & Kirkland, 2004). Matrices of inter-cap subjective dissimilarities were estimated from each subject’s “odd-one-out” choices, and processed using non-metric multidimensional scaling. Two-dimensional color spaces, individual and group (DM2 patients; controls), were reconstructed, with the axes interpreted as the R0G and B0Y perceptual opponent systems. Compared to controls, patient results were not significant for the D-15 and D-15d. In contrast, in the triadic procedure the residual distances were significantly different compared to controls: right eye, P 0.021, and left eye, P 0.022. Color space configurations for the DM2 patients were compressed along the B0Y and R0G dimensions. The present findings agree with earlier studies demonstrating diffuse losses in early stages of DM2. The proposed method of testing uses color spaces to represent discrimination and provides more differentiated quantitative diagnosis, which may be interpreted as the perceptual color system affected. In addition, it enables the detection of very mild color vision impairment that is not captured by the D-15d test. Along with fundoscopy, individual color spaces may serve for monitoring early functional changes and thereby to support a treatment strategy

    Food niche of solitary and social bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) in a Neotropical Savanna

    In this study we investigated the group of floral resources that support bee populations from a bee assemblage in a savanna, and the way in which bee species use these food resources, with an emphasis on the breadth and overlap of trophic niches. The interactions between 75 species of bees and 62 species of plants visited to obtain floral resources were recorded on a Brazilian savanna site. The bee species explored a diverse set of plant species, but concentrated the collection of resources in a few plant species. The distribution of the samples over a long period favored a robust characterization of the food niche of the bee populations. Byrsonima sericea, Serjania faveolata, and Stigmaphyllon paralias were the plant species with the highest number of links with bees. In general, the trophic niche overlap was low, with 75% of pairs of bee species having a niche overlap (NO) less than 0.33. Only four pairs showed high overlap (NO>0.70) and all cases were related to the exploitation of floral resources provided by B. sericea, a key resource for the maintenance of the local bee fauna, an oil and pollen provider

    Diversidade genética entre diploides melhorados de bananeira por meio de variáveis canônicas e do método Ward‑MLM

    The objective of this work was to estimate the genetic diversity of improved banana diploids using data from quantitative analysis and from simple sequence repeats (SSR) marker, simultaneously. The experiment was carried out with 33 diploids, in an augmented block design with 30 regular treatments and three common ones. Eighteen agronomic characteristics and 20 SSR primers were used. The agronomic characteristics and the SSR were analyzed simultaneously by the Ward‑MLM, cluster, and IML procedures. The Ward clustering method considered the combined matrix obtained by the Gower algorithm. The Ward‑MLM procedure identified three ideal groups (G1, G2, and G3) based on pseudo‑F and pseudo‑t2 statistics. The dendrogram showed relative similarity between the G1 genotypes, justified by genealogy. In G2, 'Calcutta 4' appears in 62% of the genealogies. Similar behavior was observed in G3, in which the 028003‑01 diploid is the male parent of the 086079‑10 and 042079‑06 genotypes. The method with canonical variables had greater discriminatory power than Ward‑MLM. Although reduced, the genetic variability available is sufficient to be used in the development of new hybrids.O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a diversidade genética entre diploides melhorados de bananeira por meio de dados quantitativos e de marcadores de sequências simples repetidas (SSR), simultaneamente. O experimento foi conduzido com 33 diploides, em blocos aumentados com 30 tratamentos regulares e três comuns. Dezoito características agronômicas e 20 iniciadores SSR foram usados. Os dados agronômicos e de SSR foram analisados, simultaneamente, via os procedimentos Ward‑MLM, de agrupamento e IML. O método de agrupamento de Ward considerou matriz híbrida obtida pelo algoritmo de Gower. O procedimento Ward‑MLM identificou três grupos (G1, G2 e G3) baseados nas estatísticas de pseudo‑F and pseudo‑t2. O dendrograma mostrou similaridade relativa entre os genótipos do G1, justificada pela genealogia. No G2, 'Calcutta 4' aparece em 62% das genealogias. Comportamento similar foi observado no grupo G3, em que o diploide 028003‑01 é o parental masculino dos genótipos 086079‑10 e 042079‑06. O método com uso de variáveis canônicas teve maior poder discriminatório que o Ward‑MLM. Embora reduzida, a variabilidade genética disponível é suficiente para ser usada no desenvolvimento de novos híbridos

    Perfil da mortalidade infantil em Petrolina (PE) entre os anos de 1994 a 2005

    Infant mortality is a public health problem that has experienced reductions in recent years in Brazil, due to better conditions of life and investments to promote maternal and child health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the profile of infant mortality in Petrolina-PE, between the years 1994 to 2005. There has been research that are descriptive and quantitative, using indicators of live births and infant mortality, describing the profile of infant mortality in Petrolina. We applied the system DATASUS for data collection, and the income was through graphs and tables. In the data analysis, we observed that, in Petrolina over the 12 years studied was an average of 25 infant deaths per thousand live births. In an attempt to minimize the mortality public health policies need to be more effective actions, with focus to education in maternal and child health, and invest in the achievement of pre-natal to better quality.A mortalidade infantil é um problema de saúde pública que vem sofrendo reduções nos últimos anos no Brasil, devido às melhores condições de vida da população e investimentos de promoção à saúde materno-infantil. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o perfil da mortalidade infantil em Petrolina (PE), entre os anos de 1994 a 2005. Foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa de caráter descritivo e quantitativo, utilizando-se os indicadores de nascidos vivos e mortalidade infantil e descrevendo-se o perfil da mortalidade infantil em Petrolina. Empregou-se o sistema DATASUS para a coleta de dados, e a demonstração dos resultados ocorreu através de gráficos e tabelas. Na análise dos dados, observou-se que, em Petrolina, durante os 12 anos estudados, ocorreu uma média de 25 mortes infantis por mil nascidos vivos. Na tentativa de minimizar a mortalidade infantil, as políticas públicas de saúde necessitam de ações mais efetivas, com enfoque para a educação em saúde materno-infantil, além de investimentos na realização de um pré-natal de melhor qualidade

    Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.     Photography-based taxonomy is inadequate, unnecessary, and potentially harmful for biological sciences

    The question whether taxonomic descriptions naming new animal species without type specimen(s) deposited in collections should be accepted for publication by scientific journals and allowed by the Code has already been discussed in Zootaxa (Dubois & Nemésio 2007; Donegan 2008, 2009; Nemésio 2009a–b; Dubois 2009; Gentile & Snell 2009; Minelli 2009; Cianferoni & Bartolozzi 2016; Amorim et al. 2016). This question was again raised in a letter supported by 35 signatories published in the journal Nature (Pape et al. 2016) on 15 September 2016. On 25 September 2016, the following rebuttal (strictly limited to 300 words as per the editorial rules of Nature) was submitted to Nature, which on 18 October 2016 refused to publish it. As we think this problem is a very important one for zoological taxonomy, this text is published here exactly as submitted to Nature, followed by the list of the 493 taxonomists and collection-based researchers who signed it in the short time span from 20 September to 6 October 2016
